Better With or Without Glasses: 2016 Presidential Candidates

presidential candidates with and without glassesPresidential candidates have been gearing up for the November 2016 election for almost an entire year now. And we have to say, it’s been a wild election year thus far! With several more months to go, it’s safe to say the whirlwind will continue right up until Election Day.

Now, we’re not here to talk politics. We’re here to talk glasses! Reviewing the mix of candidates, there’s a fair share of differing looks. Well, except for the first guy on our list…

Bernie Sanders

bernie sanders glasses

Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has been battling Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination. He’s managed to score a ton of popularity, with folks across the nation “Feel(ing) the Bern”. To date, he’s trailing Hillary, but doesn’t look like he’s ready to drop out of the race until the bitter end.

An Independent for most of his career, Sanders joined the Democratic Party in 2015—the same year he announced he would be running for president on the Democratic ticket. Sanders has worked his way up from being a Mayor in Vermont, to the House of Representatives, and most recently, a Senator in Vermont. And who knows, he just may be the next United States President!

One thing we’ve gotta say about Bernie is this—he sticks to what he knows, at least when it comes to eyewear. Never seen without his glasses, he’s clearly a staunch frame kinda guy. While we love seeing people switch it up with contacts, the glasses seem to work for him, and well, maybe you shouldn’t mess with a good thing.

Hillary Clinton

hillary clinton glasses

Involved in politics since her youth, Hillary is currently the frontrunner for the Democratic Party.  She’s a smidgen away from securing the amount of delegate votes she needs to win the party’s official ticket.

The nation first got to know Hillary when she served as First Lady during her husband’s Presidential run from 1993-2001, a solid 8 years. Following his tenure as president, Hillary ran—and won, the race for New York Senator. She held this position from 2001 until 2009. In 2009 she moved on to become the Secretary of State from 2009 until 2013. Is the Presidency of the United States the next step in her political journey? We’ll have to wait until November to find out…

When it comes to her look, Hillary keeps it classy and conservative—as one might expect for someone in her position. She does, however, switch it up between glasses and contacts fairly often. Which looks better? We think she looks equally good in either. The rectangular black frames don’t overwhelm her face thanks to their thin design. But when she pops in contacts we can see actually see that she has blue eyes which are really quite pretty.

Donald Trump

donald trump glasses

Did anyone see this coming? Donald Trump has loooooooong been a household name thanks to his popular businesses and even more popular reality TV show The Apprentice. Known for his bold, if not sometimes outlandish antics, many folks first thought this running was a mere publicity stunt. After all, he had tried running in 2000 but dropped out before any votes were actually made. But months later now, Trump has certainly proved any doubts wrong. Not only is he gunning for the presidency, he’s officially named as the Republican nominee. Of course, come November we’ll see if he actually makes it into the Oval office as the next President…

While he hasn’t held any political positions, Trump has been making mention of his Presidential aspirations for years—both in 2008 and again in 2012. It seems he felt 2016 was finally his year.

Trump has kept his look pretty stable throughout his career—the suit, the hair, the tan. But you know what he does switch up every once and a while? Glasses. It may not happen that often, but he does wear what appear to be reading glasses from time to time. They’re simple, small, and really, don’t look too bad on the guy. Actually, in this case, we think the glasses have a slight edge over the frame-free look.

Better With or Without Contacts? Game of Thrones Cast

game of thrones cast in glasses and contacts

Summer days may be rolling in, but Game of Thrones fans know that winter is coming! Now in its sixth season, the mega hit HBO show has viewers on the edge of their seats every Sunday evening, filled with anticipation, excitement, and oftentimes shock (HOLD THE DOOR…!).

Everyone’s got a favorite character, and from week to week… well… you know never who’s going to make it. Based off of the fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, the show has now surpassed the novels in time, meaning that not even the most hardcore fans (AKA the ones who have actually read the book series), know what to expect in the coming season. One thing we know for sure is that there is a lot going on in this mysterious, dangerous, and thrilling fantasy world.

Now we can totally nerd out all day about the show, but naturally, we’re here to do what we do best: talk about contacts and glasses. Mixing that theme with one of our favorite shows? Perfection. And with that, let’s do this: Celebrities who could’ve used contacts…Game of Thrones edition!

Sansa Starke, played by actress Sophie Turner

sophie turner in glasses

Oh, Sansa. She drew us all crazy in the early seasons of the show, as she portrayed the spoilt, willful, and selfish younger Starke sister. She helped force her way into the Lannister’s arms, only to beg for escape a couple seasons later. Now in the sixth season, she’s been through so much that we can easily forget about her antics early on in the show.

Sansa’s character is masterfully played by the English actress Sophie Turner. Even while Sansa was being completely difficult (and endangering her entire family…!), we couldn’t help being captivated by her beauty. Her long red hair, pale complexion and ice-blue eyes dazzle on the screen. In real life, Sophie Turner often wears glasses — something Sansa never does. While we love seeing her on the show without them, she totally rocks frames in real life. Sure, they may conceal her winter-blue eyes a bit, but she still looks a total beaut.

Jon Snow, played by actor Kit Harington

kit harrington in glasses

The tragic but valiant life of Jon Snow… SIGH. He has given fans way too many scares throughout the seasons, most notably at the end of Season five. We’re gonna leave it at that for anyone who is late to the sixth season, but MY GOSH is all we’ll say.

Now, let’s talk Kit Harington, the English actor who plays our beloved Jon Snow, Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. We love seeing a fresh face without frames ordinarily, but woo-weeee can Kit pull off those glasses! It’s official; he’s a complete babe either way. Kit, rock the glasses, or not. We’re happy to support either way…

Cersei Lannister, played by actress Lena Headey

lena headey in glasses

Love her or hate her, Cersei Lannister is a pivotal character in the show. Part of the extremely wealthy and powerful Lannister clan, she also happened to marry the now-deceased King of the Seven Kingdoms. Of course, she’s actually in love with her twin brother, who has fathered all three of her children, which was kept a secret, naturally, so that they can take the throne when their “father,” King Robert Baratheon, suddenly dies (by way of poison/being gored by a boar).

Played by the British beauty Lena Headey, Cersei is willing to do just about anything it takes to get what she wants. Lena, on the other hand, seems a bit more approachable. Actually, in this older shot of the actress she even looks, well, bohemian. The tinted glasses are a fun accessory, we’ll give her that, but we totally vote Lena ditches those frames moving forward.

Daenerys Targaryen, played by actress Emilia Clarke

emilia clarke in sunglasses

She may not wear glasses, but how could we do a piece on Game of Thrones without including Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragon?

Side note—fans, are you loving her self-appointed new title? It may be a mouthful, but we think it gets the point across. She’s a hardcore chick who will conquer, well, whatever she wants in the name of freedom and justice.

Emilia Clarke, raven haired and often seen giggling, seems a far cry from the isolated, serious Dragon Mother she plays on the show. But whether she’s rocking the Khaleesi -white wig or not, she is seriously beautiful. We love the sunglasses, which are giving us a Breakfast at Tiffany’s vibe. But for Daenerys, well, when fire is your friend, who needs sunglasses?

Better With or Without Glasses: Pop Icons of the ‘80s

pop icons 80s

The 1980s were a wonderfully wild and flamboyant time for pop. Drenched in funky street style, bold colors, and amazing talent, all we can say is, thank goodness there were cameras to catch all its glittering amazingness! Keep reading for looks from those who did it the best during this fine decade: Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Boy George, and Donna Summer.

Prince

prince with and without glasses

With the sad news of his death less than a week ago, memories, songs, and pictures of Prince are everywhere as fans celebrate his life and incredible musical skill. One of the most talented artists in our lifetime, Prince was one of the best-selling artists in the world. He’s sold more than 100 million albums worldwide! Some of his other accolades include seven Grammys, an Academy Award, and Golden Globe.

His musical talent was undeniable, but his fresh take on fashion and his stage presence only managed to make his sound somehow stronger. Always impeccably dressed, Prince knew how to work whatever he was wearing. Known for bright colors, prints, ruffles, and even jumpsuits, the man knew how to wow a crowd.

In light of his death, and immense talent, we’re not going to judge his different looks, glasses or not. Suffice to say, Prince smashed any style he tried. We’re still in awe of the many wild styles he pulled off—and frankly, a bit jealous. We may not have what it takes to pull them off ourselves, but boy do we admire them, and ultimately, him.

Cyndi Lauper

cyndi lauper with and without glasses

Just hearing her name is enough to make the song start playing in your head, right? “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” will never not crack a smile on our faces. The woman behind the song, Cyndi Lauper, totally owned the ‘80s. She debuted in 1983. A mere two years later she earned herself the Best New Artist Grammy in 1985.

The 80’s may have come and went, but Lauper has continued to sing her heart out. Her career has spanned an impressive 30 years. She’s also part of a very select crew—she’s one out of 20 artists that have managed to win a Grammy, Tony, and Emmy in their lifetime. Not bad, lady!

Never one to shy away from a bold statement, (totally an ‘80s theme), Lauper rocked bright hair, funky get-ups, and electric energy. The flame-like glasses on the left are a great embodiment of her style and tone. Would they work for most people? Nope. Does Cyndi manage to rock them? Totally. Even still, we adore the toned down version of her on the right. Without the glasses we can actually get a good look at her face (does she age?)—and some of that gentle spirit behind the big pop personality.

Boy George

boy george with and without glasses

Boy George, frontman for the super group Culture Club, knew how to pull off a look. Never one to shy from daring fashion statements, he’s known for his brightly colored makeup, wild locks, and bold duds.

Culture Club blew onto the music scene in 1981 from England. By their second album they were bona fide stars, having sold more than 10 million records. Some of their biggest hits include “Karma Chameleon,” “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?” and “Time.” The band pretty much dissolved by 1986, but in their first five years they sure made a splash on the scene.

Now, onto Boy George and his glasses. They look good and definitely work on his face, but we can’t help adoring him without the clunky frames, where we can really admire not only his eyeshadow but those brows.

Donna Summer

donna summer with and without glasses

She may be the disco queen of the 1970s, but Donna Summer didn’t stop rocking when the ‘80s rolled around. The five-time Grammy winner scored a Top 40’s hit every year, from 1974 through 1985. And really, she started off the ‘80s quite well, earning American Music Awards in 1980 for Female Pop/Rock, Female Soule/R&B Artist, and Pop/Rock single for her super hit “Bad Girls.” Like we said, she started the decade off right.

An undeniable beauty, Donna Summer knew how to work whatever she was wearing. We dig the huge, round glasses on the left, where she looks every bit the pop star. While they make a fashion statement, we can’t help but totally love the fresh faced, frame-free Donna on the right. The flowing curls, soft, brown eyes, and well, actually being able to see her face — just perfect.

Better With or Without Glasses: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

tina fey and amy poehler

Ever the dynamic duo, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have been making audiences laugh ‘til their bellies hurt the better part of 20 years. The comedians first met at an improv workshop, well before either had even stepped onto a film set. Clearly, they hit it off and their friendship has continued to blossom right before the world’s eyes.

They first landed television screens sometime in 2001, when Amy joined Tina on the mega-popular Saturday Night Live. By 2004, they were the official co-anchors for “Weekend Update,” a hilarious news spoof. They continued to work together up until Fey left the show in 2006.

The comedic gal pals have also shared the silver screen a’plenty. They first shared a script in the 2004 hit Mean Girls. From there they moved onto leading roles in Baby Mama (2008) and most recently Sisters (2015).

The best part about these two? They’re actually real-life besties! They’re often seen together, and have shared in many red carpet and hosting gigs. As if their accomplishments together weren’t enough, they each have hugely successful careers, thanks to individual projects. Fey created, produced, and starred in the seriously hysterical 30 Rock from 2006 until 2013, playing the wonderfully amusing Liz Lemon. Poehler, on the other hand, was busy playing Leslie Knope on the equally popular Parks and Recreation. Like Fey, she produced and starred in the show, which ran from 2009 until 2015.

At Replace My Contacts, we always pay extra attention to people’s eyewear, as you well know. So, let’s get into it. When it comes to this duo, are they better with or without?

tina fey with and without glasses

Perhaps Fey’s most famous character, Liz Lemon was never without her glasses. Considering the show ran for almost seven years, it’s hard to think of her without the famous frames, even though it’s been a while since the show ended. What can we say? They totally work for her —and we suspect she knows it. Still, we love seeing her switch it up and pop in a pair of contacts every once in a while.

amy poehler with and without glasses

Unlike Liz Lemon, Leslie Knope never wore glasses. But just because her most popular character never did, doesn’t mean Poehler doesn’t from time to time. We dig the slightly oversized black frames on the petite blonde. She looks like a boss businesswoman — which, considering all of her success, we know she definitely has that side to her! On the other hand, she manages to look somehow adorable and beautiful all at once frame-free and donning a beret. Also, less intimidating, which, we’re guessing that in Hollywood could be a good or bad thing. Either way, she is looking great!

tina fey with glasses and contacts

Not only did Liz Lemon always wear glasses, but it’s rare to spot Fey without any in real life. Maybe it’s the writer in her, but they definitely seem to suit her. We can totally see her sitting at a desk scribbling out a sure to be laughed-filled comedy. Although, we love seeing her glammed up on the red carpet without her specs in sight. It’s not often we get to see so much of her face. Maybe it’s the perfectly coiffed hair or earrings dripping in diamonds, but she looks totally regal — not at all like a woman who could eat her weight in Cheesy Blasters!

amy poehler in glasses and contacts

Based on this snap of Poehler out and about in real life, we think it’s safe to say she favors the square, thick-frame style when it comes to her glasses. And hey, who are we to argue? We already said it — they totally work for her. Of course, we’ll never tire of seeing her without glasses because, hello, just look at those beautiful, crystal blue eyes!

#TBT Celebs Who Could’ve Used Contacts: Late Night TV Hosts

Late Night TV Hosts (2)

After a long day, there’s almost nothing better than turning on a late night TV show and having a few laughs before you hit the pillow. It’s the perfect way to unwind, relax, and forget about any stress in your day. For that hour (or two…or three…) you can count on a string of stand-up monologues, a few fun celebrity interviews, and a musical number from a band you’ve probably never heard of. All in all, it’s pretty flipping great.

There have been a ton of different shows and hosts over the years. Generally, they’re highly likable, good-looking folk who laugh you to sleep. Kind of like an adult version of a lullaby. For our purposes, we’re curious about their stance on glasses and contacts, as looking good in front of the camera is a requirement of the gig! Scroll through for some of the biggest names in late night TV… and throwbacks to their best appearances in glasses.

Jimmy Fallon

jimmy fallon with glasses and contacts

Good ol’ goofy Jimmy Fallon is probably one of the most popular TV hosts out there. The comedian is no stranger to late night laughs, either. He got his start on Saturday Night Live before eventually moving into his very own show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Fallon proved himself a true late night man, eventually replacing the beloved Jay Leno as the permanent host of The Tonight Show, a monster career move. With his backing band, Philadelphia hip-hop crew The Roots, Fallon has lovingly seeped his way into American homes night after night.

Fallon hasn’t been seen wearing glasses in quite some time. Truth be told, he’s looking much spiffier these days, routinely donning a suite and tie for his hosting gig. But, as the picture on the left proves, he has definitely dabbled in frames. The dark, long, oval shape works for him, but he’s looking super suave without them on the right. We’re gonna make this one real simple: ditch the frames, Jimmy!

Chelsea Handler

chelsea handler in glasses and contacts

Late night TV is predominantly male gig. Enter Chelsea Handler, who managed to have a seven-year running late night show, Chelsea Lately, on the E! network. The wildly successful half-hour show was all about comedy. Chelsea also always included a three-person roundtable, and was never without her assistant, Chuy Bravo. Half-way through the show, Chelsea would bring in a celeb guest for an interview. Overall, it was pretty close to the typical late night format, but delightfully more inappropriate thanks to its E! network home.

Chelsea doesn’t do glasses – that is, unless they’re super dark, Hollywood-esque sunglasses, as seen on the left. Sure, it may be nighttime in this photo, but when you’ve got paparazzi flashing cameras in your face every second, the nighttime eyewear starts to make a whole lot of sense. Besides, she does look incredibly chic in them. On the right, in what we can assume are friendlier conditions, Chelsea is fresh-faced and frame-free. Glasses or not, she’s a beauty all the way.

Stephen Colbert

stephen colbert in glasses and contacts

David Letterman was a long time staple of late night, hosting the Late Show with David Letterman for 33 years. When he was ready to retire, everyone waited to see who would fill the big role left behind. Enter Stephen Colbert. Not exactly a newbie to late night, Colbert worked on The Daily Show and then later, The Colbert Report, before ending up on the CBS mega-show.

Like Letterman, Colbert is rarely seen without his glasses. Opting for a low-key, frameless style, we’re so accustomed to seeing them on his face that, well, they just seem to belong. That said, we love the frame-free look he’s sporting on the right. Way more casual and relaxed looking, we think he should consider trying out contacts more often!

Conan O’Brien

conan o'brien in glasses and contacts

Conan has been hosting late night gigs for almost his entire career. In fact, since Letterman retired, Conan is now the late night host with the longest running career, clocking in a whopping 22 years. He started as a writer for SNL. After a writing gig for The Simpsons, he moved on to host the Late Show on NBC, where he stayed comfy for about 16 years (!). He then prepared to take over the helm at The Tonight Show when long-time host Jay Leno retired. He hosted it for about a year before being awkwardly replaced. The removal of Conan created a scandal in the late night TV world, but the comedian has certainly recovered. He went on to host Conan on the TBS network, where he continues to make his audience laugh.

Conan is an unmistakable guy. For starts, he’s incredibly tall, measuring in at a lengthy 6’4. And then there’s the trademark, side-wave-swept red hair. He doesn’t typically wear glasses, and in truth, he likely only took the picture above for a sketch. Even still, it’s enough to make us firmly suggest that he stick to a frame-free face. We like the lovable comedian just the way he is — sans glasses!
